What’s a neighborhood school without the sounds of kids playing on the ball fields?
Once upon a time before a $24.7 million dollar renovation, paid for by taxpayers, Casey Junior High had two ball fields. The fields emanated sounds of girl’s softball, tag football, Latino pick-up soccer, snow sledding and games of frisbee. These sounds gave way to two years of bulldozers, excavators and dump trucks and their endless need for backing up. Now there’s only a strange silence, like from a graveyard in the middle of town. The “field” off High Street sees little to no use on weekends. It’s not designed for ball games. The lower field is locked. The signs by the locked gates warn of dire consequences should anyone jump the fence. We’re told it’s temporary. We’re told it’s because the grass seed on the sled hill needs to “take” (grass on a hill this steep is not a reasonable solution). We’re told that the astroturf has a one year warranty and caution must be exercised during this period (rigorous testing might be more appropriate). Come June 2011, we’re told, the field will once again be opened to neighborhood and public use.
Please come to speak at the next regularly scheduled school board meeting on December 14, 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the Education Center, 6500 East Arapahoe Road to tell the Board that we will be patient. But come June, we expect the dead zone to give way to sounds of people of all ages once again playing in the ball field.
